Federal Courthouse, 515 Rusk Avenue, Houston
The forces fighting the Port of Houston Authority's proposed giant container
terminal at Bayport will be in federal court on Friday, February 27 in the next
phase of the long push to defeat the Port's plan.
A coalition of four cities and eight environmental organizations has filed
for a preliminary injunction to prevent the Port from beginning construction on
this project deemed so damaging to Galveston Bay, its surrounding communities,
and all the Harris County taxpayers who would foot the bill.
The coalition's lawsuit charges that the Bayport permit issued by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers violates multiple provisions of the National
Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, and Coastal Zone Management Act. The
motion for a preliminary injunction is to uphold the law, protect the
environment, and ensure tax money is not wasted on this proposed project.
The preliminary injunction hearing will be before Federal District Judge
Vanessa Gilmore in Courtroom 9A at the Federal Courthouse at 515 Rusk in
Houston.
