Call for Partners
Concerned that people living around Galveston Bay are not being informed about
multiple threats facing the great estuary, bay advocates are calling for
partners to organize "The REAL State of the Bay" symposium.
"Many of the ongoing hazards facing Galveston Bay are simply being ignored,"
said Jim Blackburn, Chair of the Galveston Bay Conservation and Preservation
Association (GBCPA). He listed some:
* Chemical plant safety
* Continuing losses of coastal wetlands
* Threats to freshwater inflows
* Problems with Bayport and related infrastructure
* Apparent failure of the Coastal Coordination Council
"Galveston Bay is a wonderful resource for Greater Houston," said Blackburn.
"But we are making a bad mistake if we believe all is going well on this bay. "
GBCPA is calling upon individuals, environmental groups, resource agencies and
industry to join in frank discussions about real hazards, and how existing
management is failing to lead us to a sustainable future. The intent is to hold
the conference at the bay.
Planning for this event is now beginning. If you wish to help design and
implement the citizens' State of the Bay conference, please call the GBCPA
office at 281-326-3343.
